Knee Meniscus
The menisci are located within the knee joint. Each knee has two menisci which are ring like cartilages acting to lubricate and cushion the knee joint. Due to weight bearing loads encountered over years of standing and walking these structures is susceptible to degeneration. Occasionally, the meniscus can be torn, usually with load bearing pivoting of forceful bending of the knee.
Appropriate scans are required to evaluate the meniscus in severe cases but often problems will settle over 2-6 months. If problems persist after this time then a knee specialist’s opinion may be required. To avoid this fate regular your Physio will aid in improving or retaining range of movement, encouraging smooth healing of inflamed cartilage, and guiding or modifying activities to allow for proper healing. Arthroscopy repair may be indicated where recurring pain happens over 12 months or when the tear is severe.
